Abstract: Agricultural traits of Apuseni Mountains in
the Post-Communist Period. Apusenii Albei Case-Study. Our study looks at the
evolution of agriculture in a specific region of Western Carpathian Apuseni
Mountains (Romania) called Apusenii Albei, following the fall of communism up
until the 2010 Agricultural Census, with a focus on livestock farming, a basic
mountain agricultural activity. In most cases, the products derived from this
type of agriculture are sufficient only to cover the food needs of families.
Statistical data shows that livestock (sheep, cattle and pigs) population
decreased during the period in focus, 1992-2010. On the other side, the age
structure of the labour force employed in agriculture reflects the dominance of
the elderly. Overall, mountain agriculture has a subsistence character, which is
detailed in the paper.
Key-Words: agriculture, livestock farming, Apuseni Mountains,
Apusenii Albei, subsistence farming.
