Abstract: Secondary houses and holiday houses in the Apuseni Mountains.
Over the past two decades, the number of unoccupied houses in the Apuseni
Mountains (Romania) constantly increased. This trend has two opposing causes.
The first one is the demographic decline, which determines the devitalization of
many villages and a growing number of deserted houses. The second cause is the
spreading of the holiday houses in areas seen as spectacular. Due to the
different causes that generates them, the two phenomenons may sometimes
spatially overlap, but often they have different spatial distribution, leading
to the emergence of new disparities in the Apuseni Mountains region.
Key words: holiday houses, unoccupied houses, demographic decline,
spatial disparities, Apuseni Mountains
