Abstract: Addressing municipal bio-waste in Romania has
become an urgency in order to comply with the European waste directives and
attain the assumed targets for municipal waste recycling. The Management of
Municipal Bio-waste in Romania assessed the current situation in terms of
bio-waste treatment capacity and the implementation of separate collection of
bio-waste in Romania. It resulted that neither one is sufficient for attaining
the municipal waste recycling target in 2025. However, at the regional level the
situation is more nuanced. In 11 counties out of the 41, a separate collection
of the bio-waste from households has to be implemented as part of Integrated
Systems for Waste Management projects. We have focused on these counties, to
identify both existent challenges and relevant examples of good practice.
