Abstract: - The Origin and the Spatial and Urban Development of
Miercurea-Ciuc Town. A geographic analysis of spatial and urban development
stages of Miercurea-Ciuc town is necessary in order to reveal, near the general
characteristics of the phenomena, found in most medieval cities (administrative
limitations, expanding by agglutination, by absorbing the villages, continued
with the directed urban sprawl), the specific characteristics too, namely, the
gradual concentration of urban functions and even taking over functions from
neighboring settlements. We attach special importance to the long habitation in
the area and to the origins of the settlement, often superficially treated.
Along with the spatial extension of the city and the geomorphological and
administrative limitations, there are presented the development of the different
urban facilities, from municipal buildings to utility networks, as well as the
urban zonation.
Key-words: town, spatial development, urban function, agglutination,
villages’ absorption, directed urban sprawl, uncontrolled urban sprawl,
suburbanization.
